A comprehensive study by Redcliffe Labs has revealed alarming insights into the growing burden of lifestyle disorders in India. The study, which analysed health data from 2.8 million individuals, found that one in every two Indians is at risk of developing lifestyle-related health conditions, with 52 per cent of affected individuals being female and 48 per cent male.Historically, India’s healthcare system has been challenged by infectious diseases. However, with advancements in sanitation, infrastructure, and awareness, there has been a marked shift toward chronic conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, lipid imbalances, renal issues, fatty liver, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer. Experts attribute this shift to rapid urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles, stress, poor dietary habits, digital addiction, and easy access to ultra-processed foods.Dr. Mayanka Lodha Seth, Chief Pathologist at Redcliffe Labs, emphasised, “Non-communicable diseases are no longer confined to older adults; they now affect people across all age groups and genders. The prevalence of NCDs has increased from 9 per cent to 20 per cent, with approximately 62 per cent of deaths attributed to preventable and curable NCDs. This is a national health crisis, and prevention is the only way forward. Adopting an active lifestyle, prioritising nutritious foods, and undergoing regular health checkups can help in early detection and risk mitigation.”The findings underscore the urgent need for preventive healthcare measures. Raising awareness and encouraging individuals to take proactive steps in managing their health can significantly reduce the disease burden.Aditya Kandoi, Founder and CEO of Redcliffe Labs, expressed concern, stating, “The fact that one in two Indians is at risk of lifestyle disorders is alarming. While Redcliffe Labs remains committed to providing quality diagnostics, it is crucial for the community to take ownership of their health through prevention. India, as the world’s largest democracy, has the responsibility to make informed health choices, setting the right example for future generations. With over 14.4 million children battling obesity—one of the leading causes of NCDs—it is imperative that we act now.”With an increase in processed food consumption and sedentary habits, the risk of lifestyle disorders continues to escalate. The study serves as a critical wake-up call for individuals to make conscious health choices, embrace healthier routines, and prioritise preventive healthcare.Redcliffe Labs has been actively involved in raising awareness about preventive healthcare. The company’s community engagement initiatives reached over 7.2 million individuals on World Heart Day 2024 and 9.34 million people on World Diabetes Day 2024, reinforcing the importance of early diagnostics and timely action in managing lifestyle diseases.
