GOP Gov. who ripped Trump, then came crawling back: My political career is over.

That’s a wrap?

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu has referred to former President Donald Trump as an “asshole,” once joked that he belongs in a mental institution, and campaigned like hell for Trump rival Nikki Haley. But after Haley dropped out, he was back on Team Trump.

But, he says, he’s not supporting Trump because he wants to be in his good graces. It doesn’t matter to him. He’s getting out of politics altogether.

From The Washington Post: “Sununu has stood by his criticisms of Trump, and he assures us that he’s not thinking about his seat at the table. ‘My career’s over. I’m leaving,’ says the governor, who plans to enter the private sector after his current term ends. ‘I’m not running again. My political career — I have no political career.’ But as a Republican, who likes Republican policies and dislikes Democratic ones, what he really wants is Republicans occupying the seats at the top of administrative agencies — the Environmental Protection Agency, the Treasury, the Justice Department. If a Republican-led executive branch means putting Trump back in the Oval Office, well …”

Sununu had said when he was campaigning for Haley that he’d get behind Trump if he were the nominee. Thought it seemed odd to some given what he’d said about the former president.

“It won’t be his party forever. Right? It just won’t. At some point, Donald Trump won’t be here forever,” Sununu said as recently as February. “Let me put it a different way: Assholes come and go. But America is here to stay.”

And then there was the Gridiron Club’s spring dinner in 2022. Admittedly, the point of the event is to roast people. But Trump is notorious for enjoying being the butt of jokes (think of the infamous 2011 White House correspondents’ dinner).

“He’s f—ing crazy!” Sununu said at the event, adding, “The press often will ask me if I think Donald Trump is crazy. And I’ll say it this way: I don’t think he’s so crazy that you could put him in a mental institution. But I think if he were in one, he ain’t getting out!”

Trump, for his part, has called Sununu a “spoiled brat.”
