December 16, 1931.Prominent Kansas City fashion entrepreneur Nell Donnelly was kidnapped and held for $75,000 ransom. Two days later, she was free after her lover, prominent politician James A. Reed, turned to mob boss Johnny Lazia, threatening to expose his criminal activities with political boss Tom Pendergast if he refused to rescue her. Nell Donnelly and her chauffeur were rescued from a farmhouse in Bonner Springs, Kansas.
